We helped the council and clinical commissioning group in Trafford to develop a joint five-year equality, diversity and inclusion strategy.

Background
Trafford Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) and Trafford Council needed to develop a joined-up strategic way forward for equality, diversity and inclusion. The strategy for 2021-2025 was required to outline how equality issues would impact on services and fair access to those services. It needed to recognise the different needs of the residents and patients of Trafford. The aim was to create a direction of travel that would be good grounding for the upcoming organisational changes in becoming an integrated care system.

Action
MLCSU’s Equality & Inclusion Team worked on behalf of the CCG with Trafford Council to determine and agree the shared priorities and direction of travel, for both organisations, for the next four years.

We developed the strategy in consultation with the equality and inclusion steering group, elected members from the council, lead commissioners and the CCG staff forum.

Having gathered a wide range of demographic and health inequality information, we facilitated discussion and agreement in setting objectives and identifying appropriate data to inform improvement.

Impact
We worked with teams at the CCG to establish ‘success measures’, which were measurable and achievable, and in line with the NHS People Plan 2018.

We enabled the council and the CCG to evaluate their priorities in tandem and establish a way forward as partner organisations.

The strategy will make a difference to staff, residents and patients as it will improve services and reduce health inequalities.

We are advising the partnership on implementing an action plan to achieve the objectives outlined in the strategy over the next four years.
