NHS England sought to implement the Ottawa Model of Smoking Cessation in secondary care across England, integrating smoking cessation into routine inpatient care. NHS Midlands and Lancashire’s Medicines Management and Optimisation team supported this rollout, following a three-stage process: scoping with local stakeholders, pathway agreement including referral methods, and community pharmacy engagement.
The Royal Wolverhampton Trust successfully launched the service in January 2023, which was crucial after local cessation services were defunded. In 2023, 433 patients were referred, with 75% accepting cessation support, leading to a 47% success rate of 28-day quits. Despite initial challenges, proactive support and shared learning helped ensure the Royal Wolverhampton Trust became the top referring trust nationally for community pharmacy smoking cessation.
