The COVID-19 Oxygen, Ventilation, Medical Devices and Clinical Consumables Programme, which NHS Midlands and Lancashire (NHS ML) staff supported, has been announced winner of the One Civil Service Award at the Civil Service Awards 2021. The awards celebrate excellence across government and this category is a team award recognising collaboration that spans the boundaries between administrations, government departments, agencies and bodies.
The programme was established to meet the exceptional demand COVID-19 created within the NHS for oxygen, ventilation and consumables. This needed to be achieved at speed, in the face of immense global competition for supply and significant uncertainty as to the progress of the pandemic.
The programme was led by the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC), and employed the knowledge and skills of staff from a wide range of clinical and non-clinical disciplines across the NHS and numerous government departments. NHS ML deployed a senior member of staff with specialist procurement expertise into the role of Deputy Programme Director, several programme management experts from the Improvement Unit and administrators from other teams.
This work now provides a strong foundation for subsequent longer term resilience and supply collaboration, and has helped ensure the UK has the medical supplies it needs during the pandemic.
